"SCIENCE FAIR INFO Dear 7th and 8th grade parents, It is time for ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-12-01 14:44:51

SCIENCE FAIR INFODear 7th and 8th grade parents,It is time for students to start bring home the bacon for the 2008 Science Fair! Students will be to write up a proposal for their communicate and research paper by March 17th! I have a pile of project ideas and resources for them to utilize. Many students already know what their communicate will be focused on. I really need your support in this educational process. There will be due dates every two weeks in which the kids will be to show me their progress. Besides the experimental process to record the kids need to write a five-page research paper. This research should really be the background information to tell us about the factors within the investigate. This 7/8th grade class has recently finished writing a research cover for Mrs. Ellis so I believe that they will now be better equipped at writing one to support their project theme. Students need to pick a project that is challenging interesting and not beyond their ability level. The materials for the experimentation SHOULD NOT be expensive or hard to come by. I’m hoping that we can recycle everyday materials for our efforts. I undergo some science equipment that I can share but I need to know ahead of time what the students will need. I cannot provide all materials. This is another avenue that I need your help in. Attached are the due dates of the project stages. Please encourage your student to work diligently in request to receive their points for progress. Please also remind your student that copying and pasting information from internet and other sources is going to earn them a zero. All information used in writing a research cover has to be rephrased in their own words or quoted within the paper. Citations (author’s name and page number) must go the “borrowed” information within the paper. Also the students will need a “works cited” page at the end of their paper to give credit where it is due. Thank you in go for communicating with your child and encouraging him/her to do their best and to have fun too! Please show your arouse and give suggestions but bequeath that this is your child’s project! Don’t let them push all their responsibilities on you! Time management is of the essence. I ordain allow some class time but we will not devote a significant amount of class time as we have other curriculum goals to achieve. Sincerely,Nancy Marita. OLL Jr. High Science TeacherDue Dates: communicate Proposal:cover that states the purpose of project; pose the question that you want tested/answered. Hypothesize what you think the answer or result of testing will show. Include the factors(controls) within the experiment that will always remain the same and the factor that will change (variable). The variable is the one thing that you are testing. Introduction page of the project is due (¾-full page) along with one beat summon (12 font) of research that is NOT plagiarized from a legitimate source. Three more pages of investigate to support your “experimental theme” are due. This information has to be directly related to the components of your project or the historical background of your affect. For example if I am doing an experiment to evaluate common foods for proteins and salts my research would include information about the nutritional value of these two compounds and how the body uses them to do particular cellular jobs. Again citations must be made within the paper to tell the reader where the information was found. Ex: “Your body needs help making cells as you grow and replacing cells that change state worn out.” (Tanacredi p.422 ) At the end of the cover the “works cited” page will tell us more info about Tanacredi and which book/source it came from. Last summon of research is due plus the Bibliography! Students must have 3 different types of resources for bibliography. They must use 3 of the following: scientific magazine newspaper. Internet encyclopedia and/or book Citations HAVE to be shown within the cover too!!!! One chart and one diagram or graph is due. Must be done very neatly. I prefer computer generated charts/diagrams but I will evaluate color marker. Make sure these are labeled with a title and also the independent and dependent axes if a graph. be of project is due. Scientific affect (Dr. Pheac) is due plus the research paper and bibliography which have been proof-read and fixed for errors. Poster boards must be ready! Presentations this week (Monday-Thursday) Science Fair set-up in morning (gym.) go away Science Fair presentations at 12:30. Judging starting at 12:30. All parents/family members/friends are welcome! Awards presented between 2:15-2:30!

"Someone?s Getting Mail- The Diaper Tube" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-12 12:37:40

It was a diaper tube. They just had a baby and I wanted to give them something to carry all his baby-undergarments in. The bag is tube-shaped and has some inner pockets of the same fun fabric as the lining. I’m not sure if it is at all practical as I have never even looked at a diaper bag before but I suggested that if that is not the case I am sure they can let little Aidan crawl around in it! "Train to Cold Sapa" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 03:59:18

At around nine Sunday evening we board the overnight train heading for Lao Cai. We were to spend the night in a six-berth ‘hard’ sleeper. I was concerned for my comfort at first but it turned out the cramped berth was not all that bad and after Alexander got one of our fellow travelers to turn of the music he was playing for all on his phone we had a fairly comfortable rest. We arrived at Lao Cai just after five the next morning a pleasant cast down in the air. After some initial waiting for our minibus to fill up we finally started the slow control up the mountain pass to Sapa a scenic ninety minute journey passing terraced rice paddies and local villages on the way. Sapa was a bit of an old hill station back in the day where homesick colonialists came to immerse up the cool mountain air. Today it draws throngs of tourists curious to see the ethnic minorities from the surrounds go and peddle their wares in town or adventurous hikers. Or in our case populate who miss icy cold weather. And that is exactly what we got as we stepped of the minibus. I was instantly deeply satisfied with the idea of spending a whole day and night here and often saying “I’m freezing!” Sapa is spectacular. It is surrounded by high mountains and deep valleys covered in villages terraced farmlands and sieve fields. cover and clouds hung over much of the valley and area which made seeing Vietnam’s highest mountain. Fan Xi Pan impossible. But the views from town were still mighty impressive. After checking into a hotel and a very hot consume we bundled up and strolled around town. Everywhere we went we were hassled by good-humored Hmong and Red Dzau ladies to buy transfer stitched blankets or bags and plate. They are very persistent and would go us around for long distances tugging at our arms and saying “Looky-looky. You buy something for me?” I’m usually easily bothered by touts and people bothering me with their goods but these ladies never failed to alter me giggle with their persistence and simple and confusing English questions. We went for lunch at Baguettes et Chocolate a restaurant training less-fortunate youths for the hospitality industry. For dessert we enjoyed little chocolate and wine tarts; which reminded us both of the recent HHDD challenge I hosted. Afterwards we went back to the hotel for an afternoon nap. Upstairs from the wet merchandise is a dry market where some Hmong and Dzau ladies sell blankets bags skirts and silver. I bought some fabric and Alexander a Hmong blanket. Much later after perusing through his shopping bag a Red Dzau lady insists that he buys from her as well. “You buy Hmong now you buy for Red Dzau. Looky. Red Dzau all transfer make. I alter by hand. Hmong looky machine!” Even though I can see almost equal parts hand and machine work in both I decide to alter her happy and a buy an embroidered bag. At six in the afternoon the whole town again disappearing behind drapes of fog we get back on a minibus heading for Lao Cai this time. This time we got berths in a four-sleeper with a much more comfortable mattress and it is not long after the train pulled away that the steady rocking and comfortable bed make me go off. It’s just after five the next morning when we arrive back in dark and atmospheric Hanoi. This measure the city is just waking up and from the displace we continue straight to a pho command for steamy bowls of chicken pho for eat.
